Once upon a time, the thought of wearing a red lipstick instilled the greatest fear in me. Don’t get me wrong, I always admired and even got jealous of women who could pull off the most powerful color in the world.
Even though I grew up seeing my mom wearing red lipstick and she wore it beautifully, I still didn’t think I had it in me to pull it off when I got older. I think it was the fear from wondering what other people would think of me or just be super self conscious about the color just smearing all over my teeth and lips. Isn’t that the worse?
Since the beginning of time, red lipsticks have been associated with glamour, power and sex appeal. There’s a timelessness with red lipsticks that will continue to live on. So since it’s not going away, the best thing we can do is to learn to appreciate the beauty and fierceness of a red lip. You’d me amazed to see the wonders it can do not only for your outfit but for your self confidence.
This deep rooted fear is what took me a little longer to gain the courage to wear a bold red lipstick. I’m sure many of you have felt the same way, but this is what I did to gradually overcome that fear.
It’s always great to just start with a hint of color so that you can get comfortable with it and then you can gradually start to work your way up from there. A tinted lip will still give you that comfort without the fear. Instead of choosing your same old natural balm or chapstick, choose a red tinted lip balm that will give you a sheer but beautiful red tint on your lips.
1. Start with a Red Tinted Lip Balm
Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia
Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm in Cherry Me
ChapStick Total Hydration Tinted Lip Balm in Merlot
2. Red Lip Liner & Clear Gloss Combo
Wearing a red lip liner is a sure way to continue to boost your confidence. You want to outline your lips with a soft and creamy lip liner. There are many lip liners out there, but some of them can be very hard to apply and tug at your lips. Some of my favorites to use are from Colourpop but these are also some honorable mentions:
Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in True Red
NYX Mechanical Lip Pencil in Dark Red
Revlon ColorStay Lip Liner in Red
After you’ve lined your lips you want to smudge it a little bit with your fingers or just rub your lips together to distribute it evenly over your lips. You can there put one of your favorite clear glosses on top for a shiny finish.
3. Wearing a Red Lip Gloss
Lip glosses are always a fun and low maintenance way to try out different colors. If you’re looking to start wearing a red lipstick then trying out a red lip gloss is an excellent option.
It will give you a nice punch of color without it being as intense as a red matte lipstick or liquid lipstick. I like the Buxom lip glosses because they also give you the effect of plumped lips that helps to enhance the overall look.
